大多数热带海绵体内都有几种光和作用共生藻。它们可能是一些类似于但不同于珊瑚体内的甲藻。许多海绵还包含一些蓝绿藻和很多其他细菌。一些种类体内的细菌可以占海绵体重的40%。对很多热带海绵来说，这个共生关系非常重要。对于温带海绵，似乎也是一样，只是它们没有被研究过。共生藻通过复杂的过程为海绵的新陈代谢提供糖分作为能量，常常可以让海绵在礁石上获得一些竞争优势。不出意外，一些种类的海绵可以很适应生活在珊瑚礁，但一些有相似虫黄藻的海绵竟能在南极地区冰冷的深水中生活得很好。其中的一种， Rossella racovitzae 有长达10厘米的小骨棒。小骨棒像光纤管一样，把光线传导给生活在泥浆中水底沉积物下的虫黄藻 (Cattaneo-Vietti, 1996)。

图 10. 一些搭顺风车的海绵可能会成为有害生物。这种类似Leucosolenia 的石灰海绵是一个爱好者寄给我鉴定的。这种海绵成功地占据了缸内活石的大部分表面，并且很难被根除。即使有了样本，并且做了显微镜检查，我还是无法鉴定这个种类，因为我不知道它们产地。

如果海绵看起来萎缩或者腐败了，把它移动一下。饲养海绵需要考虑的因素有光照（多数种类不喜欢强光-少数例外），水流（多数喜欢强水流），潜在竞争者（不要让它们靠近软珊瑚或硬珊瑚，它们也会打化学战），缸内潜在掠食者（透孔螺和神仙鱼会吃海绵）。一旦你找到了一个好位置并且你的海绵生长良好，你的缸里就又多了一道美丽的景致。
